Great news!! How does this new implementation relate to what flox already did? Do they work in cooperation or is one or the other used depending on the kind of operation? In simpler terms, should I keep flox installed or does this new implementation make flox irrelevant for xarray?

flox only works for reductions (and accumulations in the future), this improves the more general case of GroupBy.map. Yes, it will improve things when flox is not installed, but you are better off with it installed.
